Where do I find last year's state/local refund so I can report it on this year's taxes?

You may need some of your tax information from last year to file your 2022 taxes. You can find your 2021 information on a past return. If you’re struggling to find this information, you can request a copy of your tax returns from the IRS or state Department of Revenue.

If you received a state or local refund last year, you may need to provide this information when filing your next year’s return (to help confirm your identity). You can usually find this information by checking your previous state income tax returns. If you used, an online tax preparation software, you should be able to log in to download last year's return. If you used an accountant, they should be able to provide this information to you or offer you a copy of your previous year’s tax return.

You also may have received a 1099-G from your state detailing your refund amount. But, if you don’t have this form, there are a couple additional ways you can find out your refund amount.

First, you could check your bank account statements. If you remember what month you received your state refund, it should be fairly easy to find. If you no longer hold that bank account or can’t find the transaction, you can also reach out to your state’s Department of Revenue. You may be able to log on or create an online account to find this information, or you could call to request a copy of your state tax return.
