Why is my state e-file still in pending status?

This isn’t unusual with state returns, so don’t panic!

While there are different reasons why your state e-file is still showing a pending status, here are the two most common:

  • It’s been less than 48 hours since you filed. Generally, e-filed returns sit in the pending status for 24 to 48 hours.

  • The state hasn’t started processing returns. While the IRS starts processing federal returns early in the tax season, your state may have not yet started processing state returns.

Note: This is especially common in early February (when e-filing first opens), meaning a return may remain in pending status for several days after your federal e-file status has changed to accepted.
